Sabbatical in Monterey

As I have expressed to many people, this last semester kicked my trash.  Inductive Logic: statistics/calculus mixed with logic mixed with philosophical theory.  This was my final Gen Ed statistics requirement.  When on my 2nd quiz I got a 40%, I proceeded to have a nervous breakdown complete with every self loathing declaration including “Why am I doing this? …I have no business taking these classes at 47…I haven’t had math in 25 years and I sucked at it before….I’ll never pass this class….yada yada yada. Thank heavens, that quiz curved to a 70% so at least I felt like I wasn’t the only one struggling.  I hired a statistics tutor to help me with the math part and then got down to studying my butt off, reminding myself over and over I have a growth mindset (look it up on Ted Talks, seriously) and I could do it.  B (my biggest supporter and cheerleader) recognized I needed a little quiet, just-me time and booked me a weekend by myself in Monterey.  He took over as super dad and I got completely caught up and ahead on both my classes, as well as my blog, slept 8 hours every night, took some walks along the coast, ate delicious nutritious food and recharged my determination to succeed in this insanely difficult class.  Best. Husband. Ever. (that’s a little inside joke for Cherie). Yet, it’s true…… he earned major brownie points. And I ended the semester with an A-.  A miracle in my book!

A periwinkle house overlooking the bay – 2 of my very favorite things.

IMG_3292IMG_3272I took a drive down the coast to Big Sur.  Stunning! I planned to hike through the redwoods, but when I got there I had a very unsettling creepy feeling come over me and decided that hiking alone would not be a smart plan. I’ve seen far too many Datelines.IMG_3277

My delicious organic salad I got in Palo Alto.  So good I had to take a photoIMG_3278

Think I put my comment in the wrong box????

  2. It happens that your Dad thinks YOU are a miracle. You will be the fourth of our nine children to finish a degree in your 40’s (or 50’s even) and we are ever so grateful for the many wise and sensible decisions you and Barton have made since you met and married. You both have placed your family first and the payoff, just beyond wonderful. Thanks for making us proud of so many good things you continue to do for each other. All our love.
