This is our tour guide Walter who also reprimanded me for talking to Cherie on the bus while he was talking. B thought he did it in good natured way, but that’s makes FOUR reprimands. i think I need etiquette training??
After the bike tour ended, The Zimmermans, the Saxtons, B and I took a detour to see the Eagle’s nest.
First you drive up a really scary mountain road in a big bus with steep drops on the side. then you walk down this huge tunnel to get to the elevator. Hitler was afraid of heights and claustrophobic so he made his driver back down this tunnel. He only came here 14 times and never stayed here longer than 30 minutes.
The elevator is all brass and holds 45 people and moves really fast in order to accommodate Adolph’s claustrophobia. There’s another elevator that runs along side it in case this one breaks down but can only hold 6 people, so no more than 6 people were ever allowed in the elevator with him. How did such a neurotic guy have so much power?
They put a cross with an edelveiss on top of every mountain so this one is not significant but just happens to be above Eagle’s nest.

B just had to climb up to the highest peak and I followed him. We heard there are really cool bunkers in that mountain that you can only see with a private tour that was sold out. Be sure to reserve ahead of time if you ever go. Four other couples from our group went before the tour started and we are very jealous to have missed out on it.
This was part of our packet and I thought it was great and a perfect last photo for our trip. We are home safe and sound, jet lagged and grateful for our experience. Another post to come on what the kids were up to while we were gone.

I’m convinced that going with a tour group would be the way to go. We rented a car and went where we wanted, but I think having someone who knows, would help. It was fun to just visit little villages and see the people off the tourist trail, however.

The Eagles Nest visit brought back the dvd series I just finished watching. It was called, “The Winds of War” 8 dvds and “War and Remembrance”, 12 dvds. based on the novels by Herman Woulk. I think it was a PBS series from the 80″s. Ramona and I borrowed it from Tom, but I came home before finishing it, so I bought it on line. Once I got into the war, I was anxious to get it over with, so watched it every day and felt I lived through it.

Hitler was not the only crazy leader with lots of power. Chairman Mao, who ruled China for years and also killed thousands of innocent people was looney too. Thus, China still suffers.
